I have been working at West Mercer Elementary School in Mercer Island, Washington since 2012.  Here are a selection of responses from teachers on how the mindfulness classes have helped their students and themselves.

Dr. Bloomfield’s lessons made lasting impressions.  Weeks after we started the lessons, the children remembered and used what we have learned.  It also helped me relax, refresh and remember what’s important.

– Nancy Burrill, 1st grade teacher

A number of my children have focusing and/or impulsive behaviors.  Mindfulness with Dr. Bloomfield gave them a few strategies to help them with self-management and with me to support their needs.  It also reduced transition times creating more teaching time.

– Annmarie Laird, 3rd grade teacher

I believe that Dr. Bloomfield thoughtfully and respectfully invites students to explore a more centered way of thinking.  She is wonderfully well informed, prepared, and open to any challenge she faced in the classroom.  I believe Mindfulness, and the instruction of Dr. Bloomfield, fit well into our curriculum and benefited the students in my class.

– David Baxter, 4th grade teacher

I have a student who gets emotional very easily and the breathing exercises are a focus strategy that help him calm his body back down so he can process what triggered his sadness.

– Katie McDavid, 1st grade teacher

Whenever any of my students feels s/he is struggling with focus, we’ve agreed as a class that the student can place his/her hand on their anchor spot, close their eyes and practice mindful breathing.  It’s wonderful to see this throughout the day.

– Trina Sherman, 3rd grade teacher

As a teacher, I wake up with a lot of apprehension about the plan for the day.  I use mindfulness to calm down my heart rate and promote positive thoughts.  I let the worries float away by using Mindful Thoughts techniques of labeling it as a worry and letting it go.  I have less anxiety in my life now.

– Stacy Sikora, 3rd grade teacher

I have been able to incorporate this practice to create biofeedback for myself.  I have and do use it to provide a calm backdrop on especially stressful days.  As a teacher you don’t get to “walk away” so having a small thing I can do to initiate stress reduction is critical.

– Chris Cocklin Ray, 3rd grade teacher
